Planning a Winter Road Trip to the Columbia Valley

The drive to Radium Hot Springs in winter — especially Highway 93 through Kootenay National Park from Calgary — is one of Canada’s great road trips. A little preparation makes it smooth.

Before you leave

  • Check DriveBC for live highway conditions, cameras and closures.
  • Winter tires are legally required on most BC highways from October 1 to April 30.
  • Pack warm layers — and a swimsuit for the hot springs.

The route

From Calgary it’s about 3 hours via Banff and Highway 93 South through Kootenay National Park. From Vancouver, allow a full day via Highway 1 and 93/95. Fuel up in Golden or Banff — services thin out through the park.

Arriving in Radium

Radium Chalet sits above the village at 5063 Madsen Road. Check-in runs 4–10 PM with contactless options; if weather delays you, call (250) 341-4149 and we’ll work with you.
